About the course

The two-year course covers the technical and academic aspects of construction rather than following the vocational craft discipline. Areas covered include: Surveying, Mechanical and Electrical Services, Sustainability, Environment, Science and Materials, Computer-Aided Drafting and Design, Building Regulations and Design and Planning Procedures. Assessment is via coursework (written assignments and presentations).

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 5 or above in a good range of subjects including English Language, Mathematics and Science OR a relevant Level 2 Diploma at Merit grade or above and a GCSE at grade 5 in English Language or Mathematics.

Assessment

Assessment is via coursework in the form of written assignments (two of which are externally marked synoptic assignments), and presentations that must be completed over the two-year programme. There is an externally-assessed examination.

Careers & Progression

Students who complete the course will have the opportunity to progress to university, Higher Apprenticeships or directly into employment in areas such as Architecture, Quantity Surveying, Chartered Surveying, Site Management, Project Management and Health and Safety.

Extra curricular activities

The division is focused on links with the community and community projects, offering the opportunity for work experience for full-time learners. All areas regularly host and compete in regional and national skills competitions with SkillBuild, SPARKS and HIPS. Further examples of extra-curricular activities include: employer-sponsored "Job of the Term" awards; construction site visits; entry into national trade skills competitions; excursions to national trade exhibitions; voluntary building work; visits to buildings of architectural significance.
