About the course

The modern dance world is forever evolving and a part of everyday life. Dance can be seen at the theatre, on popular mainstream television, live performance and in film. As such, you will become versatile in your art to equip you with the skills to excel. The study of Dance develops learners dance technique, performance, creative and analytical skills. The course is split into three areas: Dance as a Performer, where you will participate in practical dance classes developing technical and performance skills. You will perform a solo, duet/trio and a quartet using a variety of stimuli as a starting point.Dance as a Choreographer, in which you will develop choreographic skills both as a solo and within group choreography. Appreciation of Dance develops your analytical skills by studying the work of a variety of practitioners and companies including Rambert, Christopher Bruce, Sidi Larbi Charkaoui, Matthew Bourne and Akram Khan.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at Grade 5 or above in a good range of subjects including English Language or Mathematics. If Dance or Expressive Arts is taken at GCSE then a Grade 6 is required OR if a relevant Level 2 Diploma is taken then a minimum of a Merit grade is required. We also require students to have already completed at least three years of previous dance experience in any style.

Assessment

On this course you will be assessed in the following ways: External practical exam - Solo performance and choreography based on a choice of three stimuli set by AQA Duet/trio performance in any dance style using any theme/topic Quartet performance in any dance style using any theme/topic Group choreography based on a choice of three stimuli set by AQA External written exam - Short marker questions based on own practice, Rambert Dance Company and the set professional work Essay questions based on Rambert Dance Company and the Independent Contemporary Dance Scene in Britain

Careers & Progression

Dance courses at university or dance school in subjects such as Performance, Choreography, Teaching or Movement Therapy. It could also lead to a wide range of careers within the industry including Theatre, TV and Film, Cruise Ship and Holiday Resort entertainment and the Leisure and Fitness Industry.
